Visual Distortion
More Follow-Up
It took about five days for the swelling in my eye to go down just enough to where I could completely open my eye but I would intentionally keep it closed. Seeing that bubble was very weird because whenever I moved, the bubble would move and for some reason that made me feel nauseous.
It took about two weeks and a half for the bubble to shrink and then break into smaller bubbles. For a while my vision was still very cloudy even when I wore my glasses. I started to wonder if my eyesight would stay that way but it took a couple more weeks for my sight to become clearer almost to what it was before. But there was still something not quite right.
One issue I was having was double vision but I was told that would happen as my eye healed. The other thing was I noticed there was some distortion in my eye which caused everything to look sort of wavy and I also had a bit of pinched vision at the center that caused a blind spot.
The photo on the right of the screen is a close example of the distortion I was experiencing in my left eye.
I went back to the retina clinic for my fourth follow-up exam where I saw the head ophthalmologist who informed me that I would need a new prescription for eyeglasses due to the scleral buckle changing the curve of my eye. I told him about the distortion I was experiencing and he told me that I had a scar where my retina tore which was the reason for the wavy vision. I asked if the waviness would be permanent and he said it would. He also told me that my right eye would be my dominant eye and that the left eye would be good for peripheral vision.
I felt really sad about having permanent distortion in my eye but I decided to try try to be positive about it. My vision has never been "perfect" or "normal" and though it is quite different from the way it was before, the most important thing is - I can see and I am very happy about that.
Another positive is, scars do heal and become smaller after some time, so perhaps as the scar heals, the distortion in my eye will lessen.
